Vice President, Project Development
Metrus’ market-leading Energy as a Service (EaaS) structure enables enterprises to finance on-site energy and sustainability projects that result in the outcomes of decarbonization, increased resilience and cost savings.
The Vice President of Project Development’s primary responsibility is to work with external delivery partners (Energy Service Company ESCO partners) and with customers to structure EaaS projects. The role demands a dynamic professional capable of gaining partner and customer understanding and buy-in throughout the project development process on key technical and economic aspects of EaaS deals. This role could require up to 25% travel per month depending on the needs of the business.
The successful candidate will be able to quickly determine the path to deal execution and resource the project appropriately. As the primary subject matter expert on EaaS, they should have a working knowledge of the commercial terms, financial structuring, and engineering required to deliver required outcomes.
The VP of Project Development will be responsible for supporting all projects from proposal to contract closing and is expected to deliver multiple projects per year. While EaaS is a ubiquitous structure and can be used across many sectors, Metrus’ primary go-to-market focuses on commercial & industrial, higher education, and healthcare, with project costs ranging from $3M-30M.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop/Manage Partner Relations: Own the ESCO partner relationships including managing and directing the internal workflows needed to assess the technical and financial viability of new potential project opportunities. Conduct internal deal reviews, sponsor projects during senior leadership reviews, and align multi-party priorities to smooth out deal friction.
- Value Proposition Development: Craft and deliver tailored value propositions and offers based on a deep understanding of the Metrus EaaS structure, partner needs, and enhanced customer engagement and satisfaction.
- Own Project Development Through Closing: Responsible for lead generation by developing and executing strategic plans with key partners and steering qualified leads through the project development process to closing, optimizing both internal and external resources.
- Owning EaaS Pipeline and Performance Metrics: Managing corporate and personal KPIs and sales quotas while aiding team members in reaching collective goals.
- Deal Pitches and Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work collaboratively with sales teams, legal, operations, finance, and marketing to create and present to customers, launch sales initiatives, introduce new products, and support pipeline generation.
Skills
- Project Finance: Ability to calculate and present coherent finance structures at varying levels of understanding. Create and structure project-level cashflows and present pro formas to customers and partners. Understand the fundamentals of project finance and their impact on the project structure. Metrus has created several proprietary tools, but new tools may be required, and this leader is expected to proactively identify needs to deliver required materials internally and externally.
- Project Structuring: Deep understanding of project structuring and implications of financial and legal structures on the deal. Knowledge of the basics of off-balance sheet financing and how those principals apply to the contracts and deal economics.
- Deal Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead directly—and indirectly--and to manage complex projects with minimal supervision. Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
- Communication Excellence: Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, capable of acting as a senior representative in diverse discussions.
- Critical Thinking: Understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluation, and creating solutions will support success in this role.
- People Leadership: Proven ability to inspire, mentor, and lead diverse teams to achieve excellence in project execution and deliver outstanding results in a dynamic environment.
Experience
- Industry Expertise: 10+ years in sales, project development, or consulting within the energy efficiency or clean energy sector, with an aptitude for project finance and the ability to model and analyze project-level investments.
- Project Leadership: Strategic thinker who can assess and understand the economic, operational, and environmental benefits of Metrus’ deals. Ability to review and develop project-level contracts and exhibits that detail the scope and services of a Metrus project.
- Complex Negotiations: Highly organized with a proven ability in negotiating intricate legal structures, managing deadlines and tasks, and facilitating complex project financings.
- Market/Product Knowledge: Deep understanding of energy efficiency and clean energy markets, programs, and policies. Detail-oriented in the presentation of project cashflows and the financial modeling of investments.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience in a relevant field. Experience in third-party project finance structures, Energy as a Service, and clean energy deals is a plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Lead the function of Project Development and team members, who themselves are seasoned, experienced professionals. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Salary Range and Benefits
$175,000-$225,000 base salary only. Salary dependent and commensurate with experience and location. Supplemental pay types can include Bonus pay and Commission pay. Benefits include employer paid medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short and long term disability insurance, stock option grants, 401k plan, commuter benefits, flexible paid time-off, and paid sick leave.
