Energy Efficiency

When aging equipment creates a risk you can’t afford, Energy as a Service is the answer.

Cooling and heating make our buildings livable. The systems that cool and warm and move the air through the spaces where we live, work, learn, and heal are essential to our health and productivity. They are also expensive to operate, maintain, and replace.

Delaying the replacement of older heating and cooling equipment increases operational costs, threatens system reliability, and hobbles decarbonization efforts. Yet the upfront cost of a new chiller or boiler can leave capital-challenged organizations feeling they have no choice.

Own the benefits—not the equipment.

Metrus pioneered the Energy as a Service (EaaS) model when it was founded in 2009 as a way for customers to enjoy the benefits of new, high-efficiency equipment without the cost of ownership. EaaS leverages the energy savings generated by the new equipment to pay for the retrofit, which might include LED lighting or building automation controls. Customers can also use those savings to offset the cost of pricier equipment, like chillers and boilers.

How Energy as a Service pays for upgrades.

As an off-balance-sheet solution that costs nothing upfront, Energy as a Service opens the door to a range of upgrades.

Energy efficiency upgrades like LED lighting and water conservation measures are lower-cost projects that create significant savings that can pay for the upgrades relatively quickly. A portion of the money you save on your utility costs is paid to Metrus, which is why we call this a "pay for savings" model. Our service charge is set at a rate that is at or below your existing utility rate, so your overall operating expenses will be lower—plus you'll get all the performance and environmental benefits of new equipment. Once your contract with Metrus is completed and the equipment has been paid for, all the savings stay with you.

New heating and cooling equipment is significantly more expensive and cannot be funded through savings alone, so the customer “pays for performance” — i.e, for measured cooling and heating capacity or delivered thermal energy.

Whether the project includes energy efficiency or cooling and heating (or both), Metrus guarantees performance and assumes all project risk.

Partner with Metrus and get results fast.

By removing the financing barriers to capital-intensive projects—and the burdens of ownership—Metrus allows you to think bigger and move faster:

Invest your capital in strategic priorities, not heating and cooling.

Metrus finances, owns, and maintains the equipment, so you can spend your money on initiatives that advance your organization’s mission.

Faster deployment = quicker progress toward sustainability.

Sustainability goals and improved operational reliability can’t be postponed indefinitely. Metrus works with the best energy service companies in the business to get your upgrade done fast.

Bundle upgrades—and solar—into a single project.

Metrus believes in making energy work smarter. We can bundle efficiency improvements with major system upgrades and on-site solar power to provide a total solution, all in one contract.

Improving cooling on a global scale.

Due to global warming, the International Energy Agency predicts a 40% surge in electricity demand for space cooling by 2030. Metrus has been actively involved in international efforts to expand access to sustainable cooling through its affiliation with the Cool Coalition—a comprehensive global network dedicated to the shift toward efficient and environmentally-friendly cooling practices. As it often is for customers large and small, finance is the key to unlocking impactful change. And that’s why we’re here.

At COP 28, Metrus made a significant commitment to the Global Cooling Pledge, which advocates for nations to decrease their cooling-related emissions by a minimum of 68% by the year 2050.
