Energy Efficiency

Using less energy creates a cascade of benefits. Our mission is to make those benefits possible.

Energy efficiency just makes sense. We make it possible.

Deferred maintenance and outdated equipment can waste energy, drive up utility costs, and threaten operational reliability. Despite these negative impacts, many building owners delay making needed upgrades because of capital limitations and budget concerns.

Metrus Energy was founded in 2009 to remove these financial barriers. Our Energy as a Service model is an off-balance-sheet solution that enables customers to install new, efficient equipment with zero upfront cost. We work with leading energy services contractors to deliver a complete energy efficiency solution, from the initial energy audit to project implementation, maintenance, and monitoring.

The benefits of energy efficiency.

Using less energy creates a cascade of benefits. At the site level, energy efficiency saves money by reducing demand. (As we like to point out, the cheapest kilowatt is the one not used.) A lower energy load also makes facilities less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of energy supply and cost.

On a global level, improved efficiency reduces pollution and slows global warming by requiring less power generation. The International Energy Agency calls energy efficiency the "first fuel" because reducing demand is always the cheapest, cleanest, and most reliable way to meet energy needs. Although renewable energy is becoming more affordable and more viable as a solution to our future energy needs, energy efficiency is the most cost-effective and deployable tool available right now to reduce carbon and bring us closer to a zero-carbon future. And it's why we've made it our mission to help organizations upgrade their energy-intensive equipment simply and affordably through Energy as a Service.

How we help our customers improve energy efficiency.

New technologies have vastly improved the efficiency of some of the most energy-hungry equipment found in hospitals, universities, and commercial and industrial facilities. Metrus works with its partners to identify and replace components of a customer's infrastructure that will yield the greatest energy savings. Typical upgrades include:

  • Interior and exterior LED lighting
  • Chillers and boilers
  • Building management systems
  • Building envelope improvements
  • HVAC fans
  • Low-flow water fixtures

Metrus can also bundle on-site solar power generation and battery storage into the contract, which we call a Sustainable Energy Services Agreement.

How Energy as a Service makes greater energy efficiency possible.

Energy as a Service—which was originally introduced by Metrus in 2009 as an Energy Services Agreement—delivers the benefits of energy efficiency without the headaches. The project is funded by the energy savings generated by the new equipment, with no upfront cost to the customer. Additionally:

  • Metrus pays all project development, construction, and maintenance costs
  • Metrus owns the equipment and assumes all project risks
  • Customer payments are set at or below their existing utility rates, resulting in immediate operational savings
  • Payments are treated as an operating expense (e.g., off balance sheet)

Metrus' Energy as a Service model changes the decision matrix around an energy efficiency upgrade project. Whether your organization is concerned about failing equipment, energy costs, sustainability, or climate change—or all of the above—we make it possible to address those challenges with a turnkey solution that requires no capital outlay and features guaranteed savings.
