Metrus Energy, Inc. is a start-up company that provides capital, project development, and asset management services for energy efficiency (“EE”) projects at large commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. The Latin root Metr refers to the center or the heart of an entity which characterizes the pivotal role that Metrus plays in orchestrating the development and implementation of efficiency projects.
We offer comprehensive project financing solutions through our innovative efficiency services agreement (ESA) structure that enables our customers to avoid all capital outlay associated with the implementation of a wide range of EE measures, such as:
- Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
- High-efficiency lighting
- Energy management and controls systems
- Motor and pump replacements
- High-efficiency refrigeration systems
- Boiler and furnace replacements or upgrades
- Cogeneration systems

Channel Partners
Metrus works with industry-leading Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) and Energy Service Providers (ESPs) to implement EE projects that both lower our customer’s energy costs and mitigate the environmental impact of their business operations. Our ESCO and ESP partners identify qualified customers and EE project opportunities, conduct energy audits, procure equipment, construct projects, and provide ongoing maintenance services on EE assets.
The ESA enables our channel partners with a unique tool to expand the array of energy services that they can offer customers and fills a unique niche in the marketplace by offering customers an off-balance sheet solution to finance efficiency improvements without adverse impacts to their operating budget, debt covenants, and overall borrowing capacity.
Customers
The ESA structure provides customers with numerous financial and operational benefits, including:
- Funding comprehensive EE upgrades without capital outlay
- Enabling off-balance sheet accounting treatment for EE assets
- Enhancing the reliability of key energy-consuming equipment
- Limiting exposure to fluctuations in energy prices
- Preserving capital for investment in core business areas
- Lowering operating expenses and providing cash savings
- Receiving asset management services that provide valuable information on facility performance
Capital Partners
By aggregating multiple EE measures into individual projects and by
arranging financing solutions on a portfolio basis, Metrus offers capital
partners a differentiating and scalable platform to invest in the growing
market for EE. Metrus develops and aggregates low-risk, attractive return on investment projects in concert with its channel partners. For capital partners, this translates to opportunities for investments in project equity and construction and permanent debt facilities that encompass a diverse portfolio of EE projects.
Metrus provides 100% financing to implement EE projects using a services agreement-based structure whereby customer repayments are made on a quarterly or semi-annual basis using a set cost per avoided unit of energy basis (e.g. $/avoided kWh of electricity) or share of energy savings. ESA contracts are typically less than 10 years in duration with customers having periodic buyout options during the term of the agreement. Projects implemented under an ESA vary in size and cost, with typical investments ranging from one to ten million dollars. Metrus has established relationships with ESCOs and ESPs that install and maintain EE assets on the company’s behalf and serve as valuable channel partners by identifying new project opportunities.
